To illustrate cultural and natural history accurately and with excellence.
I was born and raised on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville (Mandarin). I was a pastor and church worker while living in Tampa for 30 years, and was the founding director of what became the state-wide self-help food cooperative program, SHARE Florida. I was also an Environmental Action Minister.
In the early 90's I teamed up with action comics illustrator Bob Lewis. The cartoons appeared as "Lewis and Clark's Explorations of La Florida" in the 1990s. The early black and white illustrations ran in 50 papers across Florida with a total circulation over 500,000. For a while they were called “Florida’s Romantic Past”.
In 2010 I resumed creation of more refined color illustrations and researched stories, and sent drafts to Bob Lewis and Richard Gamache to illustrate. Later I "warrenized" their illustrations and compacted their writings for single panels. All are fact-checked by leading historians.
Since 2013 Pam and I have lived in Saint Augustine. As an advocate for human rights I have been involved in many initiatives, including Compassionate Saint Augustine and Good Trouble.
Many of our illustrations are about people who acted on their visions of a better world. Now it is our time to act on our own visions. The future is sure to be dramatic given the challenge of climate disruption and change.

Commemorating St. Augustine’s 450th Anniversary
Dr. Warren Clark created 45 unique posters celebrating St. Augustine’s rich heritage, each telling a different story from the city’s past. These posters were displayed in storefront windows along historic streets, schools & libraries, businesses & medical offices and government buildings as part of the citywide celebration.
From 2012–2016, we were honored to partner with the St. Augustine-Ponte Vedra Visitors and Convention Bureau (VCB) on a five-year project, creating 10 original illustrations per year as part of their "Stories of Florida’s Historic Coast" series.
Many of these artworks were featured as commemorative posters during St. Augustine’s 450th Anniversary in 2015.
In 2014, 8 of 17 rabbis returned to St. Augustine on the 50th Anniversary of their arrest for civil rights actions in St. Augustine. The illustration, “The Largest Mass-Arrest of Jewish Rabbis in U.S. History”, pictures them in a sweltering jail cell that night writing as a group, “Why We Came”. The illustration was the prominent visual depiction of the anniversary events.
Public Art & International Commemorations (2015) Warren's obelisk, part of the OA450 Public Art project, is placed at the Fountain of Youth, St. Augustine, FL. This striking piece became part of the city's cultural landscape, inviting visitors to reflect on centuries of history.
A Gift Across the Atlantic
That same commemorative year, the City of St. Augustine honored its deep Spanish roots by presenting Aviles, Spain (its Sister City) with a replica of the Monument to the Spanish Constitution. This symbolic gesture marked 450 years since Admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés founded St. Augustine in 1565, beautifully connecting both cities through their shared heritage.
What does a creator of historical Illustrations do?
Warren Clark contracted with artists Bob Lewis and Richard Gamache to draw most of the initial images, bringing the historical scenes to life. Clark then refined the images, carefully enhancing details, hand-tinting them to achieve a unique visual style, and ensuring historical accuracy. In addition to his artistic contributions, Warren meticulously "compact writes" the stories. He distills complex historical events into engaging, accessible narratives in both English and Spanish. To create the booklets, Warren writes short info-texts with images, and locations to experience the story.
First Coast.TV sat down with Warren Clark to talk about the Posters that are everywhere in the city of St Augustine as it continues its 450th celebrations. He talked about the history and stories behind these illustrations.
